1) Under “PURPOSE” now reads:

The wide purpose of OpenTRV’s technology is to reduce carbon emissions, improve health outcomes and manage fuel spend more wisely while maintaining comfort. Technologies include occupancy detection and prediction algorithms, IoT, and automatically dividing the building into heating zones, with the aim to deliver carbon savings in the MtCO2 range through energy usage reduction.

Specifically for the purposes of this protocol the technology aims to reduce the amount of external space heating fuel (and thus carbon emissions) to maintain acceptable room temperatures for given external weather conditions (and thus underlying raw heating demand).



2) Under “PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS” below the “*HDD para” insert:

The deployment environment is a typical (in size, thermal performance, and usage) household such as from English housing stock, with no significant secondary heating system.

The basic testing methodology is ‘black box’, ie the primary verified performance is in terms of heating fuel consumption input vs external temperature, without regard to the mechanism that the technology uses to deliver improved efficiency in that widely-understood metric.  The aim is to test is whether energy is saved (and how much) for given external conditions, not how.  (The supporting, unverified, metrics may provide further insight on ‘how’.)


2b) Minor point: in parameters table the 15.5C can be noted as the ‘standard’ baseline HDD temperature used in the UK in the absense of specific modelling for a particular building.



3) In "Reference analysis and measurements” added to the end of the “Inputs” bullet "Optionally, record any supplementary heating systems used, such as open fires, portable fan heaters, and even dehumidifiers.” append the new sentence "Households with significant secondary heating are excluded from this protocol.”


4) Under "EVALUATION METHODS” subhead "Calculation of performance parameters” ahead of the para stating “The normalised heating …” insert “Note that the verification approach is ‘black box’, so no internal variables such as occupancy form part of the primary claim, though may be presented as supplementary support.”
